The 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GP2) is a collaboration between telecommunications associations to make a globally applicable third generation (3G) mobile phone system specification within the scope of the ITU’s IMT-2000 project. In practice, 3GP2 is the standardization group for CDMA2000, the set of 3G standards based on the earlier cdmaOne 2G CDMA technology.
3GP2 should not be confused with 3GPP; 3GPP is the standard body behind the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) that is the 3G upgrade to GSM networks, while 3GP2 is the standard body behind the competing 3G standard CDMA2000 that is the 3G upgrade to cdmaOne networks used mostly in the United States (and to some extent also in Japan, China, South Korea and India). GSM/GPRS/EDGE/W-CDMA is the most widespread wireless standard in the world. A few countries (such as China, the United States, India, South Korea and Japan) use both sets of standards, but most countries use only the GSM family.
Difference between 3GP and 3GP2
Both, 3GP and 3GP2 are file formats mainly used for playing videos with audios. However, what most people do not realize that 3GP and 3GP2 are not encoding formats, but are container files, i.e. basically wrappers for formatted video files. 3GP is a multimedia container format mainly for 3G UMTS multimedia services. It was developed by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Similar to 3GP, 3GP2 is a multimedia container format mainly for 3G multimedia services. It was developed by the Third Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2). As 3GPP defines the standard for GSM based phones, 3GPP2 defines the standard for CDMA based phones.
3GP2 is very similar to the 3GP file format, such as both are container formats based on the MPEG-4 Part 12 media file format. Both were designed to decrease storage and bandwidth requirements in order to accommodate mobile phones. However, 3GP2 does have some extensions and limitations as compared to 3GP. The 3GP2 container file format can store all the same video streams and most of the audio streams as 3GP. 3GP2 can also store various EVRC audio streams, 13K (QCELP), SMV and VMR audio streams. However, 3GP2 does not store ACC+ and AMR-WB+ audio streams. 3GP2 also contains some enhancements to 3GPP Timed Text.
