Tip: Store one-hour video an average of 2G bytes.

DVD capacity is bigger than CD-ROM for several reasons: 1) smaller pit length (~ 2.08x), 2) closely spaced data tracks (~ 2.16x), 3) slightly larger data area (~ 1.02x), 4) more efficient channel bit modulation (~ 1.06x), 5) more efficient error correction (~ 1.32x), 6) less segment cost (~ 1.06x). All of these make a data layer capacity 7 times of CD – ROM.

Dual-layer discs’ capacity is smaller than two single-layer disc. Laser have to “pass through” the outside layer of data to read the data inside the layer (a distance of 20-70 microns). In order to reduce interference between the two layers, 2 layers minimum pit length from 0.4 um to 0.44 um. In order to compensate, reference scanning speed slightly faster – 3.84 m / s, single-layer disc is 3.49 m / s. As for larger pit, the distence should be longger as well, so that it can be read easyly and correctly, and not be affected by shaking. Increase the length means less points in each circle, resulting in reduced capacity of each layer of data.
