What is AC3?

AC3, Dolby Digital, Dolby Surround AC3, A/52, and Audio Coding version 3 is the name of the lossy audio encoding format which are developed by Dolby Laboratories. AC3 the most widely used in 5.1-channel, is the successor of Dolby Pro Logic, the differences is that AC3 can provide six separate channels while the Pro Logic mix the surround channels. AC3 is very popular, applied to LaserDisc and DVD at 384-448 kbps bit rate, often widely used in cinemas with 640 kbps bit rate.
